IRS Can Levy Social Security Benefits

When a taxpayer is delinquent, the IRS can take various actions to collect the money they are owed. One of these actions is a levy against an individual's assets. Per the IRS, a levy is officially defined as "a legal seizure" of property.

The IRS can levy against Social Security benefits under a law enacted in 1997.
